How long does SEO take to produce results?
For an established site with no major technical problems, meaningful movement usually appears between the third and sixth month. A new domain takes longer, typically six to twelve months for anything competitive. Technical fixes can produce change within weeks. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is describing something other than SEO.
What can move in weeks.
Technical fixes are the fastest. Removing a noindex tag, fixing a robots.txt block or resolving a rendering problem can restore visibility within days once Google recrawls. If a site was blocked, unblocking it is not slow. See technical SEO.
Local visibility also moves relatively fast. Correcting a wrong primary category on a Google Business Profile can change map pack position within weeks, which is why local SEO is often the first recommendation for a business with a physical presence.
What takes months.
New content ranking is the slow part. A page has to be crawled, indexed, tested against existing results and gradually promoted if it satisfies searchers. Three to six months for a competitive term is normal on an established domain.
Authority is slower still. Earning the mentions and links that let a domain compete for valuable terms is measured in quarters, not weeks, and it cannot be safely accelerated by buying links.
Why a new domain is different.
A new site has no history, no links and no track record. Google is cautious about promoting it for anything valuable until there is evidence it deserves the position.
The practical consequence is that a brand new business should not plan its first year around organic search. It should plan around paid traffic and referrals while organic accumulates in the background.
What honest reporting looks like in month two.
Mostly leading indicators: pages indexed, crawl errors cleared, impressions rising, positions improving from page five to page two. Those are real progress and they are not revenue yet.
An agency showing you traffic growth in month two is usually showing you brand traffic or a seasonal effect. Be more suspicious of early good news than of early honest news.
